Warriors Drop Close Game Against Crusaders

Tigerville, SC – Southern Wesleyan dropped an intense game against the North Greenville Crusaders in a 2-1 final on Friday evening.

The Warriors put up five shots, all on goal, in the close loss to the Crusaders.  Heily Hernandez scored the lone goal of the game for the Warriors, with Molly Wanning claiming the assist.  Jen Golio played all 90 minutes in the net for Southern Wesleyan, collecting 10 saves.

"Hard fought game tonight, really happy with our effort and heart. Fighting back into the game to tie it up 1-1 and we just kept battling.  Unfortunately we couldn't get the win, but I am really proud of our effort."

 

How It Happened

North Greenville challenged early, but Southern Wesleyan's defense kept the Crusaders off the board.  The Warriors countered the attacks as Rachel Curtis took a shot on goal, but Brianna Rowe scooped it up to keep the game scoreless.  The Crusaders continued to attack as Kayla Cruse sent a shot toward the goal off a corner kick, but Jen Golio knocked the ball away to keep the game tied 0-0.  North Greenville continued to attack Golio and the defense, but Southern Wesleyan stayed strong to defend their goal.  Despite a strong defensive first half, the Crusaders led the Warriors 1-0 after the first half of competition.

The Warriors attacked early in the second half as Brooke Cash took a shot on goal, however the Crusaders countered looking to extend their lead.  The Warriors continued to fight.  Molly Wanning took a corner kick and sent it in to Heily Hernandez.  Hernandez headed it into the goal to allow the Warriors to tie the game 1-1.  Southern Wesleyan continued to put the pressure on the North Greenville defense as Molly Wanning took a shot on the goal, but Rowe claimed the ball to keep the Warriors from taking the lead.  North Greenville fought back as Megan Biehl took a shot that went high over the net.  The Crusaders regained the lead on a header goal by Natalie Johnson off a corner kick by Sarah Hazelwood.  Despite several more attempts by both sides, the Warriors kept the Crusaders from extending their lead.  North Greenville won the game in a 2-1 final.

Southern Wesleyan will close out regular season play on November 4 as they travel to Due West, SC to take on the Erskine College Flying Fleet at 5:30 p.m.
