Warriors Challenge Late, but Unable to Pass Crusaders

Central, SC – Southern Wesleyan fell to the North Greenville Crusaders in a 69-66 final on Tuesday evening.

The Warriors shot 34.5% from the field and went 79.4% from the free throw line in the loss to the Crusaders.  Four Warrior posted double digits in points with Emily Waters leading the team with 16 points.  Breanna Richardson followed with 14 points.  Lisana Burnett recorded 12 and Denisha Hall posted 10.  Southern Wesleyan had seven assists with both Burnett and Hall leading the team with three apiece.

Southern Wesleyan had 47 rebounds in the loss.  Lisana Burnett and Emily Waters each posted double digits in rebounds to give them double-double games.  Burnett led the team with 13, while Waters followed with 12.  Iva Krstevska and Shawndre' Young had the lone steals of the game for the Warriors.

How It Happened

North Greenville took the early lead on a jump shot by Ayano Shelton.  The Crusaders continued to push ahead, before a free throw by Emily Waters put the Warriors on the board behind North Greenville 7-1.  Layups by Lisana Burnett and Iva Krstevska put Southern Wesleyan down 12-9.

The Warriors kicked off the second quarter with a layup by Denisha Hall to put them down 11-12.  North Greenville maintained the lead on a three point shot by Bree Stoddard, but a three point shot by Jessica Sparks allowed the Warriors to stay within three points of the Crusaders.  Back-to-back layups by Iva Krstevska and Emily Waters put the Warriors down 26-25, but a three point shot by Bree Stoddard put the Crusaders up 29-26 at half.

Southern Wesleyan kicked off the third quarter with a jump shot by Breanna Richardson and then a free throw by Lisana Burnett allowed Southern Wesleyan to tie the game 29-29.  The Warriors pushed ahead with a jump shot by Emily Waters, but North Greenville regained the lead on a three point basket by Bree Stoddard to make the score 32-31.  The Warriors and Crusaders exchanged the lead several times, but a layup by Savannah Hughes put the Crusaders on top 44-42 after three quarters.

North Greenville took the first basket of the final quarter as Tyana Saunders made a layup to put them ahead 46-42.  However, Breanna Richardson made free throws to put the Warriors within two of the Crusaders.  Despite several baskets by the Crusaders, free throws by Emily Waters kept the Warriors within four points of North Greenville.  Baskets by Denisha Hall and Lisana Burnett put Southern Wesleyan down 65-59. Despite layups by Burnett and Richardson, the Warriors fell to the Crusaders in a 69-66 final score.


What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will next travel to Due West, SC to take on the Erskine Flying Fleet on February 16 at 2 p.m.  They will then return to Historic Tysinger Gymnasium as they host their final two regular season games of the year on February 20 and February 26.
