Warriors Split Double Header Versus Converse

Central, S.C. – The Warriors split the double header against the Converse College Valkyries on March 25 in Conference Carolinas action.  Falling game one in a final of 4-3, the Warriors won game two in a final of 4-3.

Southern Wesleyan posted eight hits in game one.  Becca White led the Warriors with two hits in the loss.  Kali Berrigan doubled and Lizzie Fela hit her ninth home run of the season.  Sara Sweatt, Lizzie Fela, and Maddie Ward all posted a RBI in the game.  Tiffany Cathey and Natalie Johnson both laid down sacrifice bunts and Maddie Ward had a sacrifice fly.  Lucy Wolff started game one, going 6.2 innings while allowing three runs and striking out four batters.

The Warriors posted 11 hits in the game two victory.  Becca White led the team in hits for game two with three hits, followed by Lexi Thompson with two.  Lizzie Fela and Thompson both doubled during the game, and Sara Sweatt, Thompson, and Michaela Wickham each posted a RBI.  Sweatt and Wickham went on to both have sacrifice fly outs during the game.  Josie Edwards pitched a complete game for the Warriors, striking out five batters while allowing eight hits.

How It Happened

Game One:

The Valkyries started the game in the top of the first when Tristan Harvey doubled and to bring Marissa Steadman home and give them 1-0 lead. However, the Warriors were quick to strike back when senior Lizzie Fela hit her ninth home run of the season to tie the game.

The game flat lined until the top of the seventh.  The Valkyries took a 3-1 lead on a single and double to bring home Tristan Harvey and Elizabeth Aguilar. However, the Warriors countered in the bottom of the seventh inning.  Kelly Cooper singled to right center and then Gibby Donald came in to pinch run for Cooper.  Kali Berrigan doubled to left center to moved Donald to third and bring Maddie Ward up to bat.  Ward hit a sacrifice fly to bring Donald home.  With Berrigan on third, Sara Sweatt came up to bat and hit a single to bring Berrigan home and tie the game and send it into extra innings.

Southern Wesleyan could not capitalize on the tie game as the Valkyries took a 4-3 in the eighth inning when Shelby Bullock scored on a passed ball to win game one.

 

Game Two:

The Warriors were the first to strike in game two.  Becca White singled through the right side to get on base.  Lexi Thompson doubled to left center field to bring White home and give the Warriors a 1-0 lead over the Valkyries.

Converse countered in the top of the fourth inning and tied the game on a single by Shelby Bullock to bring Elizabeth Aguilar home. The Warriors took the lead in the bottom of the fourth.  Amber Belk singled to lead off the inning and then moved to second on a single by Kelly Cooper before advancing to third on the throw.  Belk went on to score on a passed ball that also moved Cooper to second.  Kali Berrigan singled down the left field line.  With two runners on, Maddie Ward hit into a fielder's choice that took Berrigan out while advancing Cooper to third base.  Sara Sweatt then hit a sacrifice fly to bring Kelly Cooper home and give the Warriors a 3-1 lead over the Valkyries.

The Valkyries shortening the gap in the top of the fifth to make it a 3-2 game and then struck again in the top of the seventh to tie the game and bring Southern Wesleyan up to bat.  However, the Warriors were not leaving without a fight.  In the bottom of the seventh, Sara Sweatt led off the inning with a bunt single and then advanced to second on a single by Becca WhiteLexi Thompson then singled to center field to load the bases for Michaela Wickham.  Wickham popped the ball up in foul territory to get out, but bring Sweatt home on a walk-off 4-3 win for the Warriors.

 

What's Next:

The Warriors take the road the next two game. They play at Lander on Tuesday, March 28 at 5pm and 7pm. Then they take on the King Tornado on Friday, March 31 at 2pm and 4 pm.
