Warriors Fall In Heartbreaker To Valkyries

Spartanburg, SC – Southern Wesleyan fell 79-78 to the Converse Valkyries on Friday evening.

Four Warriors put up over 10 points in the loss.  Tatiyana Mahone and Denisha Hall led the team with 19 points each.  They were followed by Breanna Richardson with 14 points and Jessica Sparks with 13.  Richardson went on to lead the team with seven.

Southern Wesleyan posted 35 rebounds in the loss.  Tatiyana Mahone led the team with 12 rebounds to give her a double-double.  Denisha Hall led the team with three steals.  She was followed by three Warriors with two steals in the loss.  Mahone went on to boast the only two blocks of the evening for the Warriors.

How It Happened

The Converse Valkyries attacked first on a layup by Abigail Lewis to take a 2-0 lead.  A three point jump shot by Jessica Sparks gave the Warriors a 3-2 lead over the Valkyries.  Breanna Richardson drilled a three point shot to allow Southern Wesleyan to take a 6-4 lead.  The Valkyries tied the game 6-6 on a layup by Paige Johnson and then took the lead on a jump shot by Brianna James.  Southern Wesleyan tied the game on free throws by Richardson.  A jump shot by Jessica Sparks and three point shot by Kallie Hall allowed the Warriors to regain a 14-13 point advantage.  Layups by Tatiyana Mahone put the Warriors up 20-18 at the end of the first quarter.

Southern Wesleyan struck first in the second quarter on free throws by Denisha Hall, but the Valkyries countered with a jump shot by Abigail Lewis to put them down 22-20 to the Warriors.  Jessica Sparks sunk a three point jump shot to take Southern Wesleyan's lead to 25-20.  The Valkyries fought back to come to a 27-25 behind the Warriors on a three point shot by Tatum Boggs, but a layup by Tatiyana Mahone allowed Southern Wesleyan to take their lead to 29-25.  Southern Wesleyan lengthened the distance to ten points on back-to-back jump shots by Tatiyana Mahone to give them a 39-29 point lead with less than two minutes remaining in the first half.  At the half, the Warriors were up 39-34.

The Valkyries struck first in the second half, pushing to come to 38-39 behind the Warriors on shots by Brianna James and Abigail Lewis.  Free throws by Tatum Boggs gave Converse a 40-39 point advantage.  Southern Wesleyan fought back, taking a 42-40 point lead on a three point jump shot by Denisha HallJessica Sparks sunk a three point shot to push Southern Wesleyan's lead to 48-43.  The Valkyries countered with a layup by Abigail Lewis, but a layup and free throws by Kasey Howard put Southern Wesleyan up 55-50.

Converse attacked first in the fourth quarter on a three point shot by Tatum Boggs and then a layup by Jordan Brooks gave them a 57-56 point lead over Southern Wesleyan.  The Warriors regained the lead on a three point shot by Shawndre' Young to give Southern Wesleyan a 60-57 point advantage.  Converse fought back, taking a 62-60 point lead over the Warriors on a jump shot by Brianna James.  Southern Wesleyan pushed on with a layup by Breanna Richardson to put the Warriors down 62-63.  The Warriors would not go down quietly with layups by Richardson and Tatiyana Mahone to make the score 66-70.  Denisha Hall is fouled making a layup to force a free throw and put Southern Wesleyan down 75-77.  Converse won the game in the final seconds in a 79-78 final.

 

What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will next travel to Limestone on January 27 to take on the Saints at 5:30 p.m.  They will then return to Historic Tysinger Gymnasium on January 31 as they take on the Erskine College Flying Fleet at 5:30 p.m.
