Belmont, N.C. – Southern Wesleyan wins fourth Conference Carolinas game of the season versus the Belmont Abbey Crusaders 75-71.
Tomi Sanchez led the Warriors with 18 points in the win. Sanchez was followed by Cayse Branyon and Kristen Smith with 12 points apiece. Southern Wesleyan posted a 47.5% field goal percentage and were 6-13 at the free throw line. Tatiyana Mahone lead the team in assists with four assists. Mahone was followed by Breanna Richardson with three assists in the win.
Southern Wesleyan posted 34 rebounds in the win compared to the Crusaders 37. Tatiana Manuel led the team with 14 rebounds. Manuel posted one block for the Warriors. Aneysa Williams led the team with three steals.

How It Happened
Belmont Abbey struck first in the game on Saturday evening with jump shots by Gabrielle Bethel and Marilyn Malphrus to give them a 4-0 lead over Southern Wesleyan. A three point jump shot by Aneysa Williams not only put the Warriors on the board but cut the Crusaders lead in half, bringing the score to 6-3. Kristen Smith made a three point jump shot to bring the Warriors to 8-6 behind the Crusaders. A three point jump shot by Cayse Branyon allowed the Warriors to tie the game at 11, but then a second 3-point shot by Branyon gave the Warriors a 16-15 point lead going into the second quarter of competition.
Cayse Branyon started the second quarter strong for the Warriors, making a three point jump shot to give Southern Wesleyan a 19-15 point lead over Belmont Abbey. Shots by Taylor Vinson and Tomi Sanchez gave the Warriors a 9-point lead over the Crusaders. Jump shots by Belmont Abbey's Chrystal Ezechukwu and Alex Busch allowed the Crusaders to cute the Warriors lead to four points. However, a three-point jump shot by Branyon gave the Warriors an 11-point lead and made the score 36-25 at the half.
The Crusaders struck first in the start of the second half on a free throw by Gabrielle Bethel, but the Warriors countered with a 3-point jump shot by Tomi Sanchez to allow Southern Wesleyan to regain an 11-point lead. A jump shot by Tatiyana Mahone and a 3-point jump shot by Kristen Smith gave the Warriors a 16-point lead over the Crusaders.
Southern Wesleyan struck first in the fourth quarter on a jump shot by Tatiyana Mahone to give the Warriors a 61-46 point lead over the Crusaders. The Crusaders would not go down lightly as they scored eight points within two minutes of play. Taylor Vinson made a three point jump shot to keep the Crusaders to four points behind the Warriors with a score of 73-69. Southern Wesleyan won the game 75-71.
The Warriors will next travel to Emmanuel on Tuesday, February 21 at 5:30 pm before returning to Historic Tysinger on February 24 to take on the Limestone College Saints at 5:30 pm. February 24 will also be Senior Night for the Warriors.
