High Point, NC – Conference Carolinas announced the 2017-2018 Indoor Track and Field Pre-Season Poll on January 3. University of Mount Olive took first in the poll with 69 points.
Last season, the Trojans finished in first place in the Conference Carolinas Indoor Track and Field Championship. Mount Olive put up 205 points during the championship with first place finishes in the 4x400m, 400m, mile, 3000m, 5000m, 4000m DMR, shot put and weight throw. Two runners went on to compete in the NCAA Indoor Track and Field National Championship.
Mount Olive is closely followed in the poll by Limestone College. The Saints took 65 points in the poll after a second place finish in the 2016-17 season. Limestone took first in the 60m hurdles and 60m dash. The Trojans were followed by the Barton Bulldogs in third in the poll with 55 points. The Bulldogs took home third place in the Conference Carolinas Indoor Track and Field Championship in the 2016-17 season. Barton took home first in the long jump and high jump in the championship and finished with 85 team points. The third place finish was the team's highest finish ever in the championship.
Lees-McRae took fourth in the preseason poll with 50 points. The Bobcats took a fourth place finish in last season's championship with several athletes breaking school records. The North Greenville Crusaders followed the Bobcats in the poll with 46 points. The Crusaders finished in sixth place last season.
The Warriors of Southern Wesleyan and the Tornado of King tied for a sixth place finish in the poll with 39 points each. Southern Wesleyan claimed seventh in the Conference Carolinas Indoor Track and Field Championship in the 2016-17 season. The Tornado took fifth at the conference meet. The Belmont Abbey Crusaders came in eighth in the preseason poll with 29 points after finishing last season in eighth place.
"We are excited to start this season," said Head Track and Field Coach Greg Theil. "We have a lot of young athletes that we think can make a big impact for us."
Southern Wesleyan kicked off their season at the Kick-Off Classic on December 2. They will return to the track on January 12-13 as they compete in the ETSU Invitational hosted by Eastern Tennessee State in Johnson City, TN. The Conference Carolinas Indoor Championship will be held on February 17.
