Joey Maxon was hired in December 2014 as head men's and women's golf coach.
On the men's side, Maxon coached Briar Herd to a top-15 finish at the 2015 NCCAA Men's Championship Tournament as he finished tied for 12th place. He led the team to top-five finishes in two tournaments including a second place finish at the Emmanuel Spring Invitational.
He led the team to a NCCAA South Region Championship and a sixth place finish at the 2014 NCCAA Men's Championship Tournament as Zack Casto and Zach Moore both finished in the top-twenty. The men's team placed in the top five at five tournaments.
On the women's side, Callie Brothers placed 23rd at the 2015 NCCAA Women's Championship Tournament and the women's team posted three top-ten finishes. He helped Brothers shoot a school-record 78 in the final round of the UWG Invitational. The women's team placed in the top-ten in six tournaments during the 2014-15 season.
Maxon joined SWU after spending three years as an assistant under Ryan Cabbage at UNC Charlotte. While with the 49ers, Maxon helped guide the men’s team to their ninth-straight NCAA Regional berth in 2013. Prior to his stint at Charlotte, Maxon was an assistant at East Tennessee State in 2010-11.
Maxon is not a stranger to the Upstate, having played collegiately at Clemson where he was a two-time All-American. He helped the Tigers to two top-three NCAA Championship finishes and also won a pair of ACC Championships. Maxon had 14 top-ten finishes as a Tiger including two in the NCAA Championship.
After graduating from Clemson with a degree in Business Management, Maxon played professionally from 1998-2006, competing in two US Opens (2001 – Southern Hills, 2004 – Shinnecock Hills). He won 11 mini-tour events.
