Warriors Fall in Close Game Versus Saints

Gaffney, S.C. – The Warriors fell to the Limestone College Saints in Conference Carolinas action on Wednesday night in a final score of 77-67.

Darius Sharpe led the Warriors with 26 points in the loss.  He was followed by Tyus Gaines with 14 points.  Southern Wesleyan posted a 48.2% field goal percentage and were 8-12 at the free throw line.  Gaines led the team in assists with four.

Southern Wesleyan posted 33 rebounds in the loss compared to the Saints 22.  Justice McCullough led the team in rebounds with nine and blocks with two.  Three Warriors posted a steal in the loss to the Saints.

How It Happened

The Warriors stuck first in the debate against the Saints on Wednesday night on a layup by Darius Sharpe to take a 2-0 lead.  However, the Saints countered with a jump shot by Shaun Stewart to tie the game 2-2.  Southern Wesleyan was not finished, scoring six points on jump shots by Sharpe, Tyus Gaines and Zalan Richards to give them an 8-4 lead.  Limestone took the lead on a 3-point jump shot by Stewart to make the score 9-8.  The Warriors would not let the Saints hold the lead for long as layups by Justice McCullough and Jeremy Wert to give them a 14-9 lead.  Stewart and the Saints tied the game at 14 on a 3-point jump shot.  Shaq Dance gave the Saints a 26-21 lead over the Warriors with five minutes left to play in the first half, but the Warriors countered with a three point jump shot by Sharpe to tie the game once again at 26.  At the half, the Warriors were only down 32-31 after a jump shot by Gaines.

Darius Sharpe started the second half off strong for the Warriors with back-to-back three point jump shots to give Southern Wesleyan a 40-36 lead.  The Saints countered with a layups by Shaun Stewart and a three point jump shot by Kenny Hairston to give Limestone a 41-40 point lead.  Southern Wesleyan tied the game at 43 on a free throw by Jemiah Wimphrie.  Limestone took a 48-43 lead on shots by Stewart, and then a three point jump shot gave the Saints a ten point lead over the Warriors.  Southern Wesleyan cut the Saints to nine on a three point jump shot by Sharpe.  Despite a late rally, the Warriors were not able to rise above the Saints as Limestone took a 77-67 win over the Warriors.

The Warriors will next travel to Belmont Abbey on February 18 at 7:30 p.m. before going to Emmanuel to take on the Lions on February 21 at 7:30 p.m.
