Warriors Unable to Rally to Defeat Crusaders

Central, SC – Southern Wesleyan fell in the final game of the three game series against the Belmont Abbey Crusaders in a 15-9 final score.

The Warriors put up 10 hits against the Crusaders in game three of the series.  Three Warriors posted two hits during the game.  Jesse Getford and Julio Justo both had home runs during the game.  Of the nine RBIs during the game, four Warriors had two apiece.  Getford led the team with three of the nine runs.  Trey Matthews walked three times during the game and Julio Justo had a sacrifice fly.

Southern Wesleyan had seven strike outs during the game.  Josh Core started on the mound for the Warriors.  Core struck out two while allowing eight hits.  Roth Mathews, Vinny Adams, Daniel Singleton, Kyle Cook-McCrary, Aaron Bennett and Aaron Wimpey all came in to pitch in relief.

How It Happened

Southern Wesleyan put the first runs of the day up on the board in the bottom of the first inning.  John Garrett hit a single through the left side to kick off the inning.  With one out, Jesse Getford came up and hit a home run deep over the left field wall to give the Warriors an early lead.  Julio Justo followed with his fourth home run of the season to put Southern Wesleyan up 3-0.

In the top of the second, the Crusaders put one run on the board on a double and single to make the score 3-1.  Belmont Abbey threatened in the top of the third, but with runners in scoring position Josh Core was able to pitch out of the inning with no runs allowed.

In the top of the fourth inning, Belmont Abbey took a 5-3 run lead and lengthened their lead to 8-3 in the top of the fifth.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, back-to-back walks to Andrew Falgiano and Jesse Getford put two on with no outs.  A wild pitch by Blake Waldren allowed both runners to get into scoring position.  Julio Justo hit a pop up in foul territory to get out, but his pop up allowed Falgiano to come in and score.  With Getford at third, Quinton Bent singled to left field to put the Warriors down 5-8. 

In the top of the sixth the Crusaders put up a ninth run, however Noah Fritz caught a line drive to deep center field to end the inning and keep the score at 9-5.  In the top of the seventh, Belmont Abbey continued to put the pressure on the field to take a 14-5 run advantage.

Southern Wesleyan rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning.  With two outs, Quinton Bent walked and then advanced to second on a single by Steven PerezTrey Matthews walked to load the bases.  With the bases loaded, Noah Fritz hit a single through the right side to bring the score to 14-6.

Jesse Getford walked to start the eighth inning for the Warriors.  Brady Hill hit both Christian Ketchup and Conner Ewing to load the bases.  With the bases loaded, Steven Perez singled to right field to bring both Getford and Ketchup in to make the score 14-8.  Back-to-back walks to Trey Matthews and Noah Fritz allowed Ewing to come in to score. 

The Crusaders put up their fifteenth run of the game in the top of the ninth inning to win the game.


What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will next travel to Lander to take on the Bearcats on February 28 at 4 p.m.  They will then resume Conference Carolinas action on March 2-3 as they travel to the Erskine College Flying Fleet.
