Warriors Rally Back, But Cannot Come Out On Top

Central, SC – Southern Wesleyan rallied back, but were unable to come away with a sweep, falling to Virginia-Wise 12-11.

The Warriors posted 17 hits, with John Garrett leading the team with four.  Garrett, Jesse Getford and Conner Ewing all doubled, and Julio Justo had a sacrifice fly.  Izzy Martinez led the team with four RBIs and Quinton Bent had two walks.  Getford was also fast on the bases and stole the lone base for the Warriors.  Josh Core started the game for the Warriors.  Core pitched 3.2 innings while striking out two batters.  Kyle Cook-McCrary and Daniel Singleton came to pitch in relief.

How It Happened

The Cavaliers jumped out first in the top of the first to score four and take the lead.  A series of errors and base hits allowed Virginia-Wise to increase their lead to 7-0 in the top of the second.

Southern Wesleyan countered in the bottom of the third inning.  John Garrett led off the inning with a single and then advanced to second on a ground out by Andrew Falgiano.  A double by Jesse Getford brought Garrett home and put the Warriors on the board.  Julio Justo advanced Getford to third on a single up the middle.  With runners at the corners, Conner Ewing grounded out to bring Getford home and put the Warriors down 7-2.

The Cavaliers pushed their lead up to 11-2.  The Warriors countered in the bottom of the sixth.  With one out, Conner Ewing hit a double to right field and then advanced to third when Quinton Bent grounded out.  Devin Patrick was hit by a pitch to put runners at the corners and bring Noah Fritz up to bat.  Fritz singled to centerfield to bring Ewing home and advance Patrick to second base.  Izzy Martinez singled up the middle to allowed Patrick to come home.  With runners at the corners, John Garrett doubled down the left field line to bring Fritz home and put the Warriors down 5-11.

Jesse Getford led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a double to left field.  A passed ball put Getford on third and then a sacrifice fly by Julio Justo allowed Getford to come cross home plate.  Conner Ewing followed with a walk and then a single by Quinton Bent put runners at first and second with one out.  Devin Patrick singled through the right side to move the runners up a base.  Noah Fritz walked to bring a run in and then a fielder's choice by Izzy Martinez brought Bent home to put the Warriors down 12-8.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Quinton Bent walked to lead off the inning. A single by Devin Patrick moved Bent up to second base.  Noah Fritz grounded out to the pitcher, but both runners advanced a base pad.  With both runners in scoring position, Izzy Martinez singled to right center to bring both Patrick and Bent home to put Southern Wesleyan down 10-12.  Martinez advanced to second base on a passed ball.  A single by John Garrett allowed Martinez to advance to the third base.  With runners at the corners, AJ Canine singled down the right field line to bring Martinez home and put Garrett at third.  However, the comeback was short lived as Southern Wesleyan fell 12-11.


What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will have a two game series against the Piedmont International Bruins on February 20 and 21st.  They will then open up Conference Carolinas action against the Belmont Abbey Crusaders on February 23 and 24.
