Central, S.C. – Southern Wesleyan Baseball players Julio Justo and DiMarkus Sanders were named to the NCCAA All-South Region Team. Sanders was placed on the team as an outfielder, while Justo earn a spot as a utility player.
DiMarkus Sanders, a senior from Laurens, SC, lead the team RBIs for the season with 25. Posting a .306 batting average over 49 games played, Sanders had 55 hits with five doubles and 21 walks. The South Carolina native posted a game high three RBIs in three games this season. In the opener against the Pfeiffer Falcons, Sanders posted not only three RBIs, but three hits, four runs and three stolen bases in the game.
Julio Justo, a sophomore from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, played several different position for the Warriors during the 2017 season. The Dominican Republic native, posted a .333 batting average in 35 games played for the Warriors. He contributed 23 RBIs, 19 runs, 15 walks and 36 hits during the season. Justo posted three RBIs in five games. Of the 36 hits, Justo had nine doubles, one triple and three home runs. His three home runs came over the course of a five day spread.
"It is a great honor for Julio and DiMo to be selected to the NCCAA All-South Region team this spring," said Head Baseball Coach Mike Gillespie. "Both had successful seasons and helped us through the year. Julio really got going at the plate middle of the year and unfortunately had his season cut short at the end with the hand injury. DiMo was as steady as you get in centerfield and actually led us in RBI, showing his leadership and consistency with runners in scoring position. Julio was a .400 hitter much of the last part of the season and ended up at .333 and led us in extra base hits."
In addition to have two players placed on the NCCAA All-South Region team, the Warriors had five players named NCCAA Scholar Athletes for the 2017 season. The Scholar Athletes included: senior outfielder Justin Brew, sophomore catcher Bowen Brock, senior outfielder Drew Carson, junior infielder John Garrett, and senior pitcher J.J. Julian.
