Coach Gillespie Says…
"Proud of our guys for battling back. You always want an opportunity at the end of the game and that's what we got. We had some plays early on where we gave up some outs and bases. In a close game those come back around. We need to come out tomorrow and play a complete couple of games. I'm confident we will rebound from tonight's tough loss."
How It Happened
The Flying Fleet struck first in the Friday night game on a single by Chaz Davey to bring Chase Watts around to score in the first inning. Erskine went on to strike again in the top of the second inning when a single by Destin Nichols brought Kyle Heiss across home plate to give the Fleet a 2-0 lead over the Warriors.
In the top of the fifth inning, Chris Rave singled up the middle with the bases loaded. The singled brought both C. Watts and William Ruby home, allowing the Flying Fleet to lengthen their lead to 4-0. A single by Ruby in the top of the sixth brought Erskine's lead to 5-0.
Southern Wesleyan would not let the Flying Fleet do all of the scoring in the game, however. In the bottom of the sixth inning, John Garrett reached on an error by the third baseman and then went on to advance all the way to third base in the play. Andrew Falgiano singled up the middle to bring Garrett home to cut the Flying Fleet lead to 5-1.
In an exciting inning, the Warriors tied the game to force extra innings. Trevor Walker started the ninth inning with a single up the middle. Justin Brew followed with another single to move Walker to second, and then Drew Carson reached first on catcher's interference to load the bases. With the bases load, Jason Moldenhauer hit a grand slam to left field to allow the Warriors to tie the game at five.
In the top of the 11th, the Flying Fleet took a 6-5 lead over the Warriors. With two outs, Watts singled to bring Taylor Maxey across home plate and allowing Erskine to win the first game of the three game series.
The Warriors will return to the Con on March 4 to take on the Flying Fleet in the last two games of the three game series. They will then travel to Truett-McConnell on March 7 before returning home for a three game series against the Pfeiffer University Falcons on March 10 and 11. The Warriors will honor those who served on March 11 during Military Appreciation Day.
