Southern Wesleyan University has developed a well-rounded program of financial aid to assist students in their quest for a college education. Each student is given personal consideration, and an attempt is made to the financial aid package to the student’s need. How do I become a recruited student-athlete? Fill out the on-line recruit form and submit it to your sport(s) of choice. You may also send video tapes, newspaper clippings, stats, and letters of recommendation from current coaches and a current transcript to your selected SWU coach. If your candidacy fills a need, you’ll be contacted. Do coaches take walk-ons for their respective teams? Depending on the situation, some teams rely on walk-ons more than others, so there are cases where unknown walk-ons can make a varsity team. A prospective walk-on should still be an accomplished high school or college transfer varsity athlete to be considered. Students with recreational experience in sports should consider the University’s intramural program. How much time should I schedule for intercollegiate athletics? The Warriors are members of the Southern States Athletic Conference, NAIA and the NCCAA. SSAC teams are located in Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Travel for SSAC contests range from 1 hour to 4 hours one way. Most teams make at least one trip to another region each season. Most teams will play a traditional schedule and have a non-traditional workout schedule in the opposite semester. SWU student-athletes should expect to balance academic progress, spiritual development and their athletic experience. How should I schedule classes? Incoming freshman are usually scheduled by advisors. You should inform your advisors that you are planning to compete in varsity athletics. SWU coaches are aware that some academic scheduling can not be helped and the coach will work around your scheduled classes. What is the procedure for athletic injury claims? As an additional benefit regarding student-athlete accidents Southern Wesleyan University maintains a policy that serves as excess medical coverage, (after your family’s personal insurance) in the event of injuries received from an athletic event through no fault of the participant. 1) Student-athlete will report accident first to their coach and to the Certified Athletic Trainer (CAT). 2) If a referral to a physician is deemed necessary from the CAT, a claim form must be filled out prior to going to the appointment. 3) The student-athlete should file the claim on their insurance or their parents insurance first. Your insurance policy is considered primary and SWU is the secondary insurance carrier. 4) Most medical providers will file the bills with your insurance company. If not you should submit all bills to your insurance company first. 5) Remaining or unpaid charges should then be submitted, with an itemized statement, UB 92 or HFCA 1500, and then the EOB to SWU care of Mr. Charles Wimphrie. 6) It is the student-athletes responsibility to gather and send the EOB, medical bill, canceled check, and/or receipts to Southern Wesleyan University. 7) In rare cases the excess policy may not cover all of the costs. If this is the case, the remainder of the bill is the student’s responsibility.
Will I be assigned housing with other athletes? There are no athlete only dormitories on the campus of Southern Wesleyan University. You should apply for student housing during your admissions process of application to SWU. How can my friends and relatives keep up with my Warrior team?
