Central, S.C. – Thursday November 16th will be a memorable day for Head Basketball Coach Charles Wimphrie. After 30 plus years coaching for the Warriors, Thursday will be Coach Wimphrie's last home opener as the beloved staff member will be retiring at the conclusion of the 2017-2018 season.
Coach Wimphrie began his coaching career in 1986 as the assistant women's basketball coach, then in 1993 he began coaching men's basketball. During his first two years as head men's basketball coach, Wimphrie guided the team to back-to-back 20 win seasons and ultimately National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) regional and national tournament appearances.
Earlier this season, a luncheon was held to celebrate the man and coach who had become so committed to not only the school, but also the transformation of the student-athletes who entered his locker room. During the luncheon, plans were revealed to name the basketball court at Tysinger Gymnasium for him in recognition of his years of coaching and mentoring. On hand to applaud Wimphrie were his wife Sandra, University President Dr. Todd Voss, Athletic Director Chris Williams, Vice President for Advancement Dr. Lisa McWherter, Vice President for Student Life Dr. Joe Brockinton and Associate Athletic Director and Head Women's Volleyball Coach Julia Reininga.
"Coach Wimphrie has influenced hundreds of students here at SWU and all throughout the Upstate through his summer basketball camps," Director of Athletics Chris Williams said. "Charles has used the sport of basketball to share the Word of God and grow the Kingdom. We are so proud of coach and know that his story doesn't end here. We are proud to have coach's name on the Historic Tysinger court."
That was not all the celebration that took place leading up to the final home opener. During the Alumni Awards Dinner earlier this year, Southern Wesleyan's President Dr. Todd Voss announced the launching campaign to endow a $25,000 scholarship in Wimphrie's name to carry on the legendary coach's legacy by assisting future students seeking a Christ-Centered higher education degree.
This is only the beginning of a year of celebrating the distinguished Southern Wesleyan Head Coach. On Saturday, November 18, before the game versus the Columbia International Rams, there will be a Court Naming Celebration as Southern Wesleyan recognizes the coach and the court floor that has been named after him.
