Southern Wesleyan University softball traveled on Tuesday to take on the Tornados of Brevard College, and came home with a split. Brevard dominated game one, as Martika Elmore threw a 6-inning, 16 strikeout no-hitter. Casey Johnson took the loss for the Warriors, allowing 8 runs, for a final score of 8-0 in 6 innings. As has been the case on multiple occasions this season, SWU battled back in game two. The Warriors, with Candace Graves in the circle, held the Tornados to 3 runs through the first five innings. Southern Wesleyan got on the board in the 6th inning. With one out, Tish Winchester singled, and Meagan James followed with a walk. Cristy Hudson then stepped to the plate and hit a double to left field, scoring Winchester. James was thrown out at home attempting to score on the play. SWU held Brevard scoreless in the bottom of the 6th, and came to bat in the top of the 7th with the score 3-1. With one out, Carrie Hudson hit a sharp single between the third baseman and shortstop. Megan Lee then hit into a fielders choice, reaching first as Hudson was retired at second base. Liz Elliott then entered as a pinch hitter, and drew a walk. Cortney Moore re-entered the lineup to run. Tish Winchester then singled through the right side, loading the bases. The next batter, Meagan James drew a walk, forcing Megan Lee home for the first run of the inning. Cristy Hudson then hit a double to the right field line, plating Moore and Winchester. Kayla Galloway followed with an infield single, driving in Meagan James for the final Warrior run of the inning, giving Southern Wesleyan a 5-3 lead. Brevard scored a run in the bottom of the 7th, but with two outs already recorded in the inning, an illegal substitution became the third out, ending the game at 5-4.
