Warriors Hold on for 84-81 Victory

Wilson’s 24 points and 10 rebounds lead SWU

Visiting Truett-McConnell College owned the first seven minutes and the final 90 seconds of the game, but Southern Wesleyan owned the rest of the game, outscoring their opponent 71-46 en route to an 84-81 victory.

Sebais Duck opened the game with a basket in the lane, but the Bears’ Tyron Louis and Quint Moss drained back-to-back three pointers to gain an early 6-2 lead. After the lead increased to 12-7, Truett-McConnell (5-19) ran off eight consecutive points with Moss connecting on two more three-point baskets and Louis knocking down two free throws.

Following a Southern Wesleyan (9-10, 1-8) timeout, the Bears were able to add another point to their lead, but the Warriors made their first run of the game, outscoring the Bears 15-5. Nate Miller’s three-point field goal started the comeback and a total of six different players contributed to the 15 points scored by the Warriors.

Southern Wesleyan kept chipping away at the lead and then with four minutes remaining, the Warriors’ Tait Oliver was fouled on a three-point field goal attempt. Oliver made two of the three free throw attempts to even the score at 32-32. Back-to-back field goals by Southern Wesleyan’s Nikola Lambic gave the Warriors their largest lead of the first half and the Bears trimmed just one point off the lead as the first half expired with Southern Wesleyan clinging to a 39-36 lead.

There wasn’t much movement in the margin at the start of the second half, but another three-point basket by Moss put the Bears back on top 44-43. Truett-McConnell’s lead was short lived as Aramus Smith sank two free throws to give Southern Wesleyan not only a 47-46 lead, but also a lead that they would not relinquish.  One of the most exciting baskets of the game came next as a Bears’ turnover led to a Nathan Wilson slam dunk with authority which brought the Warriors’ faithful to their feet.

The Southern Wesleyan lead kept growing and eventually reached double digits with 3:35 remaining in the game. Wilson brought the house down with another one-handed slam dunk to give his team a 77-65 lead with two minutes remaining. The Bears could have easily thrown in the towel at that point, but they kept fighting back. Moss came through with another clutch three-point basket to cut the lead to 84-81 with 1.4 seconds remaining, but the Warriors passed the ball to Sebais Duck who avoided being fouled until the final horn sounded.

The visiting Bears were comfortable on the offensive end of the floor as they went 12-for-18 from three-point range, with Moss making 7-of-9. Meanwhile, the Warriors connected on 46 percent of their field goal attempts while maintaining a 42-29 rebound margin and a plus-four turnover margin.

Nathan Wilson recorded a double-double as he scored 24 points, which were a team high, and grabbed 10 rebounds, which tied for the team lead. Aramus Smith added 15 points while Duck and Tae Roebuck each scored 10 points. Moss had a game high 28 points as he made eight of his 12 field goal attempts.

Southern Wesleyan will focus on bringing their overall record to .500 this Saturday when they host Lee University who is ranked 22nd in the latest NAIA poll. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
